Scarborough snorkeling - fun and relax for you and your family
Every fish in the Caribbean probably knows that the waters around Tobago are as nutrient-rich as you can find. South America’s great Orinoco River discharges just beyond Trinidad, the Southern Atlantic currents swirl around Tobago, and the Caribbean itself adds to the profusion. For divers, the result is dramatic, in terms of both fish and coral. The Atlantic coast supports welldeveloped sloping reefs, while the Caribbean coast is primarily composed of rocky formations with encrusted sponge and coral growth. You will find a wide variety of hard and soft corals – sea rods, sea sprays, sea plumes, sea whips, encrusting gorgonians, sea fans, star corals, elkhorn corals, fire corals, large brain corals and mountainous star corals covered with Christmas tree worms and split-crown feather dusters. The coral reefs around Tobago support seemingly limitless species of multi-coloured fish, coral, sea fans and sponges, manta rays, sea turtles, starfish and sea urchins . . . Buccoo Reef is the largest and most accessible coral reef, and was designated a marine park in 1973. The system consists of five reef flats separated by deep channels. An associated lagoon, the Bon Accord Lagoon, is almost completely enclosed by Sheerbird’s Point and a dense mangrove belt. Glass-bottomed boat tours start from Buccoo and Pigeon Point. Among the other top snorkelling spots in Tobago are Kariwak, Dutchman’s Reef, Arnos Vale, King Peter’s Bay, Englishman’s Bay, Pirate’s Bay, and Angel Reef. Points to remember: Always swim within your capabilities. Don’t forget the effects of tides and currents. Never snorkel alone. Practise your skills in shallow water. Do not go snorkelling after a heavy meal. Wait at least an hour to avoid the risk of cramps. Never swim against the current – swim diagonally across it. Never touch, handle or feed marine life except under expert guidance. Never rest or stand on coral, or (the ultimate sin) break a bit off as a souvenir.
