In Tobago the Independence Day parade took place at the Shaw Park Grounds, with a march through the streets of Scarborough, which ended at the Scarborough Port. Chief Secretary In the Tobago House of Assembly Orville London said in an address that although he was proud of the island there had been mistakes but tremendous progress. Members of the armed forces and unarmed contingents paraded before an appreciative crowd. The Regiment, Coast Guard, Defence Force, Police Service and Cadet Force in addition to the Fire Service, Scouts Association and Girls Guides all showed uniformity. Speaking at an official ceremony at the Port, London said the occasion marked the growth and maturity of a people. He said, "As we celebrate today we as Tobagonians must demonstrate the highest level of maturity, as we intensify our efforts to determine and secure our status in an independent Trinidad and Tobago." London said with the introduction of the second inter island ferry, the T&T Spirit, prices on the island should decrease, and to ensure that Tobagonians were not taken advantage of the Assembly would be taking certain steps. He then announced that the Consumer Affairs Division will be mandated to resume the publication of schedules listing prices for various commodities at outlets throughout Tobago and Trinidad. This he says will give consumers an opportunity to draw their own conclusions and make informed decisions. "While I am proud of the island after 45 years (of Independence)," he said, "there have been mistakes made, but there has been tremendous progress, as the physical infrastructure of the island has been transformed in every sector." Added London: "Let us as an island, and a country, be informed by our mistakes and be motivated by our achievements, as we embark on another year of independence that will see us closer to our goal of providing a high quality of life for all the people of Tobago and Trinidad."
